Secret Service rush to protect Joe Biden as car plows into motorcade

Joe Biden looked shocked as a car rammed into an SUV guarding his motorcade on Sunday night.

Secret Service agents had to rush the US President into another vehicle after the drama which came as he left his campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware.

Biden and First Lady Jill Biden were unharmed.

The 82-year-old and his wife had shared a meal with staffers when the collision happened around 8pm.

While Biden was walking from the office to his waiting armoured SUV, a sedan hit a Secret Service vehicle that was being used to close off intersections ahead of the president’s departure.

The driver then tried to continue into a closed-off area but armed personnel surrounded his vehicle with weapons drawn and instructed him to put his hands up.

Biden looked over towards the loud bang that rang out and muttered ‘Wow!’ before he was ushered into the vehicle, where his wife was already seated.

The couple were driven swiftly back to their home.

A pool of reporters and photographers captured dramatic footage.

The driver complied with the agent’s commands and his name has not been released.

Journalists were quickly shuffled away with one of Biden’s team instructing them: “They’re evacuating, you guys gotta go.”

Biden’s schedule was otherwise unaffected by the incident.

Special Agent Steve Kopek, a Secret Service spokesman, said the vehicle struck was securing the route of Mr Biden’s motorcade.

“There was no protective interest associated with this event and the President’s motorcade departed without incident,” NBC News quoted Mr Kopek saying.
