A MALE youth has been charged after two police officers were assaulted and injured in an incident involving a large group of young people.

Police Scotland said on Wednesday that a young man has been charged in connection with vandalism after the disorder that took place in Byron Square, Aberdeen, on Sunday.

Police had earlier arrested and charged a 16-year-old male after officers stopped and seized an alleged illegal electric bike at about 9.15pm.

Officers also issued a warning to an 18-year-old man in connection with alleged shoplifting from a nearby premises.

While police were at the scene, a large group of youths gathered and carried out serious anti-social behaviour and violence towards officers.

A police car was also vandalised during the incident.

Chief Inspector Vicky Stables said: “It is vital that officers are safe while carrying out their role in protecting our communities.

“Being faced with such anti-social behaviour and violence is deplorable.

“This type of behaviour will not be tolerated, and we will continue to investigate and identify those involved.

“High visibility patrols remain ongoing in the local area and officers are working with local businesses to provide reassurance. Anyone with concerns should speak to officers.”

Police Scotland said the investigation is ongoing to identify others involved.

Stables previously urged members of the public to contact police on 101 if they have any information that could assist officers.
