Sea World's polar bear cub officially named Mishka

One of the most popular residents on the Gold Coast, a three-and-a-half-month-old polar bear, finally has a name.

The female cub has been dubbed Mishka, a name with Russian and Inuit links.

It was one of two cubs born to mother Liya at Sea World in April.

Her sibling, also a female, did not survive.

Sea World polar bear supervisor Tacha Mullligan said almost 30,000 people voted on the name.

"It means little bear or baby bear," she said.

"If you are really fond of something or love something you would call them your little Mishka."

Mishka is currently about 20 kilograms and the size of a Labrador puppy.

"She is a little firecracker," Ms Mulligan said.

"She's getting bigger she's getting stronger and she's just amazing to watch grow."

"She's definitely her mum's daughter ... she's such an independent spirit already. She's so curious about everything."

It is hoped Mishka will be on display to the public in September.
