Air search called off for Qld surf skier

Hopes are fading for a young man who didn't make it back from a surf ski trip around North Stradbroke Island off Brisbane.

An aerial search for the man has been suspended but vessels are continuing to look for the 26-year-old, who disappeared on Saturday.

He and a friend, 28, set out from Dunwich on the western side of the island about mid-morning.

They planned to paddle around the northern tip of the island to Cylinder Beach but were reported missing when they failed to return.

The missing man's friend reached safety when he made it to the Amity Point Wharf about 8pm.

More than a dozen vessels are continuing to search for the other man but four choppers involved in the search have been stood down.
