Search for person in River Avon: Emergency services stand down but sighting thought to be credible

Emergency services have stood down their search for a person in the River Avon but say it is "difficult" to know if someone could still be in the water.

Police received reports of a person in the water at Hotwells at 12.48pm today (September 19). At the time, the tide was flowing out of Bristol.

Despite searches from a police helicopter, coastguard, police and fire crews, no one has been found in the Avon. A final coastguard search took place at 2.45pm.

An Avon Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said at 3.20pm: "We've left the scene after being unable to find any casualty in the water.

"All resources have been stood down. It is believed the initial call was a credible sighting and description, but we did not ourselves have any sight of a casualty.

"We are not disbelieving, but we have not found anything. With the tidal water flowing out, it now becomes a police, coastguard and RNLI issue, if and when any body is discovered, or not."

Asked if someone could still be in the water, the spokesman said: "At this stage it is difficult to know.

"Unfortunately in these situations, it would be a case of time, depending on how the river goes.

"The police will clearly do their work in relation to any missing persons. The coastguard was carrying out a final search at 2.45pm."

Emergency services were seen carrying out searches at the banks of the Avon, from Hotwells to Shirehampton, this afternoon.

Fire engines from Temple, Bedminster and Patchway attended.

Avon and Somerset police have been approached for any further details.
