Man charged over fatal south Canberra crash

Yarra Glen, which becomes Adelaide Avenue, has been closed to traffic for several hours.

A 21-year-old man has been charged over a fatal car crash last night in Canberra's inner south.

The man was allegedly driving northbound along Yarra Glen in Hughes when the car rolled across the median strip and ended up in the southbound lanes.

One person died in the crash and police said a man and a woman, believed to have been passengers in the car at the time of the crash, fled the scene before officers arrived.

This morning a police spokeswoman said the man is facing several charges including culpable driving causing death, driving while disqualified and exceeding the speed limit.

He is expected to face court today.

Police called on the public for assistance in finding the people who fled but confirmed just after 10:30pm that the pair were in custody.

Sergeant Marcus Boorman said the investigation was ongoing and the deceased's family was still being notified.

"For reasons unknown this vehicle has lost control and tragically a person is deceased," he said.

A bus was pulled up across the grassy median strip, having got stuck when the road was closed, but was allowed to drive off about 8:15pm.

The road was closed in both directions between Carruthers Street and Melrose Drive just after 6:00pm on Tuesday.

The death is the first on the ACT's roads for 2018.
