Search for crab fisherman swept off rocks on Mornington Peninsula

The man was swept into the water near Bridgewater Bay.

A search is underway for a 53-year-old man who has not been seen since he was swept off rocks near the Blairgowrie back beach on the Mornington Peninsula last night.

Police believe the man was fishing for crabs with a female friend near Bridgewater Bay when they were swept off a rock and into the water about 8:00pm.

"The woman managed to make it safely back to shore and was able to contact Triple Zero," Victoria Police said in a statement.

"Officers have resumed the search this morning with assistance from the Water Police, Air Wing and Search and Rescue."

Rough weather conditions last night hampered the search, police said.

Last weekend, two volunteer lifeguards died going to the assistance of a tourist who got into trouble near Port Campbell on Victoria's south-west coast.
