Sean McVay says he overthought Rams’ game plan for Super Bowl LIII

Sean McVay may have spent too much time on his game plan for Super Bowl LIII, if that’s possible. The Los Angeles Rams coach recently reflected upon how he felt he managed his time poorly in the two weeks leading up to the title game against the New England Patriots. In preparation, he watched all 18 games from the Patriots’ 2018 regular season and postseason. He also dove into the film from previous two Super Bowl appearances.

“You have so much time that you can over-prepare and get away from some of the things that helped you get there,” McVay told Sports Illustrated in a recent interview. “I watched every game from New England’s season. You see stuff that worked in, say, Week 3, but you forget about the amount of stuff that’s taken place since Week 3. You can watch so much film that you lose perspective.”

Because he had time to be thorough, McVay decided to dive deeply into New England’s game plans. But he seemed to find so much information that he didn’t know how to distill it. That could have contributed to his team putting up just three points in the Super Bowl after scoring almost 30 points per game during the regular season.

“I operated knowing I had another week,” McVay told SI. “That urgency to completely finalize the game plan wasn’t quite there, and that led to me watching so much film that you can almost water down your thought process.”
