Seahawks left tackle Duane Brown is about to turn 36 years old and he’s appeared in 186 regular season games already. However, he’s still blocking at a high level. That’s one of the reasons Brown wants a new contract before the 2021 season begins and why he’s staging a “hold-in” at training camp by showing up but not practicing.
Brown doesn’t seem to be getting anywhere, though. According to a report by Bob Condotta at the Seattle Times, the team wants to keep him but they want to wait until next year. There are no active negotiations.
“Sources have said the team is not in active negotiations with Brown, having told Brown they want to keep him but want to get through the 2021 season before addressing his contract situation.”
Brown’s current deal will pay him $10 million in base salary this season, which ranks No. 16 among left tackles.
The Seahawks’ position is understandable given Brown’s age. However, they’re running the risk of alienating their best offensive lineman as well as their franchise quarterback, who’s gone out of his way to support Brown. Russell Wilson recently told reporters “age is just a number” and Brown is playing like he’s 28 or 30. The team is also very thin at OT if Brown is taken out of the equation. In tomorrow night’s preseason opener Stone Forsythe is expected to start at left tackle.
Jamal Adams is also in a contract dispute and is staging a similar hold-in. Seattle has reportedly made their “final offer” to the star safety.
