Seahawks rookie L.J. Collier diagnosed with ‘rare’ ankle sprain

Seattle Seahawks rookie defensive end L.J. Collier was carted to the locker room during Tuesday’s practice with what was diagnosed as a high-ankle sprain. However, the sprain is a rare type.

“It’s not a garden-variety sprain at all,” coach Pete Carroll told reporters Thursday. “It’s a little bit of an unusual one — upper part of his foot. It’s an unusual one for us. We really haven’t had a guy sprain his ankle just like this.

“It’s a rare sprain.”

It’s uncertain how much time Collier will miss this summer, or if he’ll even return for the preseason.

“It was really an awkward position that he got tangled up in, so we’ll have to take some time here to figure it out,” Carroll continued. “It’s going to be some weeks, though.”

Collier’s loss is a particularly difficult blow to the Seahawks following the trade of Frank Clark to the Chiefs this offseason and the six-game suspension handed down to Jarran Reed for a personal conduct policy violation.

The team — minus Collier — resumes practice Friday morning before the mock game Saturday afternoon at Pop Keeney Stadium in Bothell.
