Seahawks looking to veteran wide receivers to step up this season

The Seahawks are hustling to adjust their receiving game now that Doug Baldwin is no longer on the roster. Seattle drafted three wide receivers in April to help fill the void but the coaching staff isn’t just looking to the rookies, they are hoping the returning veterans will step up as well.

“So it’s not just the young guys,” offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer told reporters during OTAs. “We’ve got some vets that were here that maybe we didn’t capitalize on last year because obviously, Doug had a good year and stuff, but we’re excited about what those guys can do. But it’s just time, it’s work, and we’ve got a long way to go before we play a real game.”

Besides the obvious use of Tyler Lockett, Schottenheimer mentioned David Moore and Jaron Brown as two returning players he expects to take advantage of the opportunity alongside the rookies.

“The NFL is change, right?” Schottenheimer continued. “And that’s part of the deal. But we certainly believe so. We believe that adding those guys to the guys that we had – David Moore coming off of a good year last year – is exciting. Jaron Brown, I just mentioned him earlier, but he did so much of the dirty work for us last year that you kind of forgot—we kind of forgot—that he’s a really established receiver and he’s looked dynamic out here.”

The Seahawks will get a better look at all their options when the roster reports for training camp at the end of July. Until then, quarterback Russell Wilson is taking the reins as he hosts his receivers this summer during his famous beach workouts.
