Scuffle breaks out as walkers queue to get to the top of Snowdon

A scuffle broke out at the top of Wales' highest mountain on the Bank Holiday weekend as a man tried to jump the queue of people waiting to grab their photo on the peak.

Hundreds of people climbed Snowdon on Sunday and had to wait patiently at the summit, which stands 1,085 metres above sea level, while everyone took it in turns to have their moment.

But chants of "Join the queue" broke out as one man seemed unwilling to wait his turn and appeared to go up the summit the wrong way.

The man, dressed in an orange hi-vis jacket and black beanie, was blocked by another walker and there was a minor scuffle as he tried to force his way past.

The waiting crowds struck up their chorus as the two men grappled with each other until the apparent queue jumper backed down.

Samantha Wright, who was one of hundreds who set off for the summit on Sunday, filmed the confrontation at around lunchtime. Groups were queuing for about an hour to reach the top.

On Saturday, Traffic Wales stated that 13 vehicles had been towed for illegally parking on the pavement around Snowdonia, following weeks of rising visitor numbers.

Sharing a photo of the vehicles lined up along the road, a spokesperson wrote on Twitter: ‘Can you spot the “No Parking” sign? North Wales Police have been busy today dealing with various inappropriately parked vehicles on the at Ogwen Valley.’

A pre-booked parking system is now being trialled due to the region’s popularity since the UK came out of lockdown.
