'Screaming' Leeds man claims he was beaten up by police and 'thought he was going to die'

A Leeds man is claiming he was beaten up by police while walking home from a night out with friends.

A police car drew up alongside Kian Scott, 20, early on Thursday morning when he was drunk and heading back to his flat in Rothwell, Leeds.

Kian claims that after he fell on ice while trying to run away in panic, a police officer knelt on his back and hit him repeatedly.

Kian said: "I thought I was going to die. I admit I was very drunk.

“But there was no excuse for what he did. I was screaming at him to stop.”

Kian is now covered in bruises, and he has filed a complaint with West Yorkshire Police, as well as hiring a solicitor to see what action he can take.

He had decided to sober up by walking home from where he was drinking with his friends.

Kian added: “I wanted to get some air and someone must have seen me out of the window and called the police.

“I suffer from mental health issues so when the police came behind me I ran off because I was scared. I ran but slipped in a garden because I just had socks on.

“He then came and knelt on my back. I didn’t fight back but I was a bit fidgety on the floor.

“Then he punched me and started laying into me, left, right, left. A woman police officer was there and she was shocked. Then she passed him the CS gas which he sprayed in my eyes.

“At one point I begged him to stop saying ‘you are going to kill me'. I was screaming.”

Kian was treated at hospital in handcuffs after an ambulance was called.

He said his injuries are "horrendous", adding: "They shouldn't be able to act like that."

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police confirmed they have received a complaint which has been passed to the Professional Standards Directorate.

The spokesperson said police officers received a report of a man acting suspiciously, and were called out on Thursday at 2.17am.

“He was subsequently released without charge on the burglary offence and bailed pending CPS advice in relation to assault with intent to resist arrest, assault of an emergency worker and being drunk and disorderly.

“A complaint has been received by the Professional Standards Directorate and is being looked into.”
