Scrap weekly unit tests, say teachers

AHMEDABAD: An association of primary teachers has written to the Gujarat Council of Educational Research and Training (GCERT) asking it to put an end to weekly unit tests in primary school and to also stop considering students’ scores in Gunotsav, the annual evaluation of schools.

In the letter, the teachers argued that while the state government has stop considering unit test scores in Gunotsav for high schools but continues to do so for primary schools. The letter says if the authorities are unwilling to fully do away with unit tests, they should allow schools to conduct only two unit tests a year; one per term and to not consider students’ scores in Gunotsav.

Teachers also asked GCERT to allow schools to draft unit test papers and conduct exams on their own. As of now, GCERT drafts the question papers for unit tests and sends them to schools. Sources in the association said teachers want the weekly unit tests done away with as they have prepare the results every week and send them to GCERT. Teachers want to get out of this routine as it adds to their work load, sources said.
