Scrambler crash and rooftop standoff in week of 999 calls

These are some of the incidents that saw Merseyside Police officers called out after members of the public called 999.

In a week dominated by headlines concerning the bomb outside Liverpool Women's Hospital, officers continued to respond to more emergency calls across the city.

While counter terror police continued in their investigations, Merseyside Police continued to respond to a number of other serious incidents while also dealing with the aftermath of the bomb outside a city hospital.

These are some of the incidents police were called to respond to in recent days.

Rooftop standoff

Residents of Knowsley Road, St Helens reported being woken up by sirens and shouting at around 5.30am on Wednesday, November 17.

People in the area reported a man on a roof, and emergency services attempting to get them down, they said: "We could hear police shouting at someone to get down."

Footage shared from Knowsley Road shows a helicopter at the scene, as well as a fire engine, several police cars and ambulances.

A 33-year-old man from St Helens was arrested on suspicion of burglary and taken into custody for questioning.

City centre crash

Emergency services were called shortly before 8pm to Erskine Street near the Royal Liverpool University Hospital on Wednesday evening.

Two cars had been involved in the crash near to the junction of Moss Street.

Pictures of the scene showed two fire engines, with multiple firefighters, ambulance and police in attendance and a stretcher can also be seen.

One person was taken to hospital by ambulance as a precaution.

Man in his 50s killed in crash

Floral tributes have appeared at the scene of a fatal road accident in St Helens.

The emergency services were called out to Travers Entry, in St Helens, at around 7.40pm on Wednesday night.

Officers were called following reports of a crash involving a silver Nissan Qashqai and a silver Kia Ceed.

Emergency services attended and a man, believed to be in his 50s, died at the scene.

Another man, also in his 50s, was taken to hospital for treatment after the crash and is now recovering at home.

Yesterday floral tributes appeared at the scene of the accident. A sign had also been left by police stating that a crash had taken place and appealing for witnesses.

Armed police scrambled to residential street

Armed officers were sent out to Litherland in south Sefton on Thursday morning following reports that a man was seen "with a weapon."

Locals told the ECHO about the scale of the police operation.

The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "We saw about eight or nine police cars all come down here. Saw the helicopter flying around too.

"Someone rang up about a lad shouting about having a gun apparently. They blocked the road off. A lot of police were here. The armed unit were here as well. They didn’t even let me leave to get the paper this morning."

Police later confirmed that the armed officers were sent to Bowland Drive following reports that a man had been seen with a weapon.

A spokesperson said: "Armed officers attended after further reports of an unconfirmed sighting of the man in possession of an unknown weapon, although no threats or injuries have been reported to the public.

"A scene is in place on Bowland Drive whilst officers carry out an extensive area search for the man."

Scrambler crash

Police were called to the scene on Parkstile Lane in Croxteth by North West Ambulance Service just after 3.20pm on Thursday.

The teenage rider of a scrambler bike was rushed to hospital with injuries to his face and arm.

Merseyside Police said his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The driver of the Renault van stopped at the scene and is assisting police with their enquiries.

Police cordon off Parkstile Lane, Croxteth after crash (Liverpool Echo)

A police spokesperson said: "We are investigating following reports of a road traffic collision involving a van and a scrambler bike in Croxteth.

"Officers were contacted by the North West Ambulance Service following the collision at just after 3.20pm today on Parkstile Lane.

"The teenage male rider of the bike suffered injuries to his face and arm and was taken to hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

"The driver of the Renault van stopped at the scene and is assisting with enquiries."
