Scramble for Euro 2020 tickets has reached as an unprecedented level

Republic of Ireland fans are among those in a scramble for Euro 2020 tickets that has reached an unprecedented level.

Ticket requests for the first Europe-wide championships this summer, with Dublin one of the host cities, have gone through the roof.

There have been over 28 million requests for the 2.5 million tickets available for the 60th anniversary event across the 12 host countries, double the amount for Euro 2016.

In particular, during the sales phase in December, almost nine million requests were received, over three times more than during the same period ahead of Euro 2016.

The highest demand has been for the final at Wembley on July 12, which has attracted more than 714,000 ticket requests, eight times the stadium's capacity.

The Republic of Ireland's involvement at the championships is still up in the air of course.

Mick McCarthy's men face Slovakia on 26 March in a play-off semi-final, with the winner travelling to either Northern Ireland or Bosnia for a final showdown.

Whether the Boys in Green make it through or not, Dublin will still play host to three group matches and a round of 16 clash.

Last July, more than 14 million tickets were requested during the first three weeks of the sales window.
