Ross County battled to earn what could be a precious point when Gary Warren’s own goal handed the Scottish Premiership’s basement side a 1-1 derby draw at Inverness.
Marley Watkins broke the deadlock close to half-time when he steered a terrific curling shot past Antonio Reguero into the net, but Warren deflected a Jackson Irvine cross into his own net with 15 minutes to go.
The draw keeps County six points behind Motherwell, with Caley Thistle still in third, level on points with Aberdeen and three behind Celtic, who have two games in hand.
Greg Stewart denied 10-man Hamilton a morale-boosting win with a late goal as Dundee salvaged a point at Dens Park. Accies, despite having Dougie Imrie sent off after 54 minutes for a stamp on Stewart, looked set to end a run of four successive defeats with a win as Martin Canning, their new player-manager, headed them in front with five minutes left. However, they were not able to hold on and Stewart struck with two minutes to go to extend their unbeaten run to six games.
John Sutton prevented Motherwell suffering a sixth consecutive league defeat as they bounced back from debutant Louis Laing’s red card to draw 1-1 with St Johnstone. Motherwell started a new era, under owner Les Hutchison, and they appeared to be heading for a poor start when Murray Davidson scored an early goal.
Hutchison, watching from the directors’ box 24 hours after assuming control, saw another Motherwell newcomer get his Fir Park career off to a bad start. Centre-back Laing, who signed on loan from Nottingham Forest on Friday, was sent off by Willie Collum after tangling with the Saints striker Chris Kane.
Motherwell lacked confidence, but they rediscovered their belief after half-time and Sutton equalised in the 75th minute.
In the Championship, former Hearts striker Christian Nadé struck an injury-time equaliser for Raith Rovers in the 1-1 draw at Hibernian. Jason Cummings, the Scottish Championship’s top scorer, had the first shot on goal, from 25 yards, but his effort was well held by the Rovers goalkeeper, David McGurn. Martin Boyle had opened the scoring for Hibs after 46 minutes.
