Scottish Premiership 'set for shutdown' for 2022 winter World Cup as calendar shake up includes Scottish Cup rethink

The Scottish Premiership is set for month-long shutdown next season during the FIFA 2022 winter World Cup in Qatar.

According to a BBC report, Scotland’s top flight will take a break for 34 days while the international action is on in the Middle East.

The pause would come on November 13 - the day before global governing body FIFA has stipulated players must be released - with league action not resuming until December 17 - one day before the World Cup final in Doha.

Scottish Premiership clubs are reportedly being consulted over a July 30 kick off with 16 rounds of fixtures being played before the break.

That would result in a later finish to the league season with May 27/28 earmarked for the final weekend of the season.

And the Scottish Cup final would then be pushed back to June along with the Premiership play-off final.

The report states that lower leagues wouldn’t be affected by the move and the League Cup would be concluded in February.

The World Cup runs from 21 November to 18 December and the English Premier League have already discussed plans for a seven-week break.

Scotland are aiming to reach their first World Cup since France ’98 and can move a huge step closer to securing a play-off place when they take on Israel at Hampden on Saturday.
