Scottish 'miracle pets' who have survived injury or illness wanted for PDSA awards

Animal charity PDSA is on the hunt for Scottish pets who have made a miraculous recovery after surviving injury or illness.

The Pet Survivor awards will be open to any pet which has been treated for a life-threatening condition.

In 2016 the competition was won by a Scottish working Cocker Spaniel called Darcy from Dundee.

This poor pooch survived a 60ft fall down Glascarnoch Dam in July 2016.

It was a miracle she was still alive, but she had suffered multiple life-threatening injuries, and it was touch-and-go for her at first.

Her recovery meant months of rehabilitation and operations.

Another Scottish pet reached the finals of last year’s competition – Maximus the miracle moggy from Fife went whisker-to-whisker with three other pets after a suspected traffic accident left him with extensive head injuries, and the loss of his right eye.

He had to be resuscitated twice, and his jaw had to be pinned back together, but he fought through everything and survived.

Black cat Dexter from Cornwall was crowned 2018's Pet Survivor after he was shot in a deliberate airgun attack.

PDSA Vet Olivia Anderson-Nathan said: “Dexter received the coveted title of Pet Survivor to recognise his incredible survival spirit, his owners’ dedication, and the skill and expertise of all the vets and vet nurses who helped to save his life.

"We’d like to hear from anyone whose pet has an extraordinary story of survival against all odds, or who has cheated death by a whisker."

Applications can be made until September 8 here.
