A 19-year-old Scottish ice hockey star has died after falling from a balcony at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel.

Gary Kelly, who played for the Dundee Stars and Aberdeen Lynx, fell from the third floor of the four-star hotel just after midnight on Monday morning.

Despite best efforts from ambulance crew, Kelly died at the scene.

The police are now investigating the tragedy, with the Civil Guard confirming that it is “investigating the death of a 19-year old British man at a hotel in San Antonio in Ibiza.”

The force added: “The alarm was raised around 12.40am this morning.

“Our officers were sent to the scene but the man in question was already dead by the time help arrived.

“The fall was from the third floor of the hotel to an outside part of the complex.

“Court officials authorised the removal of his body at 2.40am this morning.

“The fall could be accidental based on the early information obtained from cameras but as part of the investigation possible witnesses will need to be located and interviewed.

“The results of the post-mortem will also be important to the investigation.”

The popular party spot and hotel Ibiza Rocks has said it has suspended all its events in a statement which read: “We are deeply shocked and devastated by the recent incidents that have tragically occurred

“Our priority is to support those affected and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time, and to fully assist the authorities with their investigations. The safety and wellbeing of our guests has, and always will remain, our highest priority.

“Given the seriousness of the situation and out of respect for those involved, we believe it is right to pause our advertised events programme at this time.

"All customers will be informed directly via email."

Following the news of Kelly’s death, tributes have been shared across social media. In a post shared on Instagram, the Dundee Stars said: “The Dundee Stars are truly devastated to learn that Gary Kelly has tragically passed away

“We send our thoughts and condolences to Gary’s family, partner, and all his friends at this extremely difficult time”

Aberdeen Lynx also shared a post on Instagram, writing: “Gary was more than just a talented hockey player — he was a young man full of heart, passion, and dedication. On the ice, he gave everything he had”

Earlier this month, another Scottish holidaymaker Evan Thomson, 26, also died at the same hotel. It is understood that Thomson had been celebrating on holiday when he fatally fell from height.

A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office told the Courier: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.”

The Foreign Office has previously issued cautions about the risks of balconies abroad.
