Scottish Government confirms NO new deaths from Covid in Tayside

The Scottish Government has confirmed NO coronavirus deaths were reported in Tayside in the last 24 hours.

Data from Public Health Scotland also shows that 138 new cases were recorded overnight in the region.

The area's death toll - composed of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - remains the same at 751.

In total, Tayside has recorded 51,909 cases of Covid-19 since the pandemic began.

The latest local vaccination data shows 330,506 have received their first coronavirus vaccination, 301,270 their second and 150,121 their booster or third dose.

Across the country, 2,244 new positive cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the last day - a total of 724,983 since the pandemic began.

There were no Covid-confirmed deaths recorded over the weekend - with the caveat that most registry offices are generally shut on Saturdays and Sundays - meaning the total remains the same at 9,562.

There are currently 715 people in Scotland's hospitals with 52 in intensive care.

The latest figures come after Nicola Sturgeon urged people to wear face masks in public and to test themselves regularly after a new variant of covid was discovered in Scotland.

The First Minister held an emergency covid briefing on Monday after six cases of the omicron variant - first reported in South Africa - were found in Greater Glasgow and North Lanarkshire.

Sturgeon told Scots there was a lot that was still unknown about the new variant and scientists were now studying it round the clock to find out more.

But she said people should follow existing rules - and she urged employers to let staff work from home wherever possible.

The First Minister also insisted Scots should not be cancelling Christmas plans.
