Scottish Government announces seven Covid deaths and 3,367 new cases overnight

The Scottish Government has confirmed there has been seven coronavirus deaths and 3,367 new cases overnight.

The death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – now stands at 8,058.

There are currently 317 people in Scottish hospitals battling the virus, with 33 being treated in intensive care.

Some 4,068,806 people have received the first dose of the Covid vaccination and 3,512,673 have received their second dose in Scotland.

The figures come as a new study found that the efficacy of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine declines faster than the AstraZeneca jag.

Experts at the University of Oxford found that the level of protection provided by both vaccines after four to five months remained the same.

However, the effectiveness from the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine was maintained over this period.

Scientists found the jag produced by Pfizer/BioNTech had greater effectiveness initially before dipping.

Sarah Walker, professor of medical statistics and epidemiology at the University of Oxford, said: "We don't yet know how much transmission can happen from people who get Covid-19 after being vaccinated - for example, they may have high levels of virus for shorter periods of time.

"But the fact that they can have high levels of virus suggests that people who aren't yet vaccinated may not be as protected from the Delta variant as we hoped.

"This means it is essential for as many people as possible to get vaccinated - both in the UK and worldwide."
