Scottish Government announces one death and 735 coronavirus cases in last 24 hours

One person has died overnight and 735 new Covid cases have been confirmed in Scotland in the last 24 hours, the Scottish Government has announced.

It means the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days before death – is at 7,679.

The number of people who died in Scotland where Covid was mentioned on the death certificate is now 10,130.

There are currently 124 people in hospital confirmed to have coronavirus with 14 being treated in intensive care.

The total number of positive cases since the pandemic hit stands at 243,610.

To date 3,441,217 people have received their first vaccination with 2,345,181 having a second jab.

It comes as Nicola Sturgeon is being urged to help prevent a covid "vaccine apartheid" opening up between some of the richest and poorest countries around the world.

The First Minister is facing calls from charities to act in a bid to help vaccinate the entire world against Covid-19.

Leaders from the G7 are set to meet in Cornwall, England tomorrow where coronavirus recovery, including a global vaccination programme will be discussed.
