Scottish Government announces 61 new coronavirus deaths and 2,160 cases

61 coronavirus deaths have been recorded in Scotland in the last 24 hours.

Jeane Freeman confirmed the latest numbers during the coronavirus daily briefing where it was also announced there were 2,160 new cases of the virus recorded.

The total number of cases now stands at 159,239.

1,860 people are in hospital – up 31 overnight – while 141 are in intensive care.

The Health Minister also confirmed that 224, 840 people have now been vaccinated across Scotland.

Of the new cases 636 were in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 339 in Lanarkshire, and 262 in Lothian. The remaining cases are spread across 11 other health boards.

It comes as Scotland bans travellers from South America and Portugal over the new strain of coronavirus in Brazil.

The worrying new variant has been discovered in Brazil and may be more transmissible between people - similar to the strain found in the UK last month.

The travel ban, which was announced by the UK Government and backed by their Scottish counterparts, also includes arrivals from the Central American state of Panama and Portugal and travellers from the former Portuguese colony of Cape Verde.

British and Irish nationals and others with residence rights are exempted from the measure though they must self-isolate for 10 days along with their households on their return.

There is an exemption also for hauliers travelling from Portugal to allow the transport of essential goods.
