Scottish Government announces 18 coronavirus deaths amid 525 new cases

A further 18 people have died of coronavirus in Scotland in the last 24 hours.

The Scottish Government confirmed the latest statistics this afternoon, which reveal 525 new cases of the virus have been identified overnight.

This brings with total death toll since the pandemic began to 7,129, of people who tested positive within 28 days.

There are 898 people in hospital with the virus and 74 are being treated in intensive care.

It comes as health secretary Jeane Freeman confirmed the vaccine rollout will be organised by age rather than occupation.

The news means teachers, police officers and other key workers won't be given priority with coronavirus jabs.

Jeane Freeman said some 94% of 64 to 69 year-olds had now received their first jab with the country on target to have offered every adult a dose by the end of July.
