Scottish Government announces 17 deaths and 7,676 covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed that 17 people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures for Scotland showed that 7,676 new cases had also been identified overnight.

It brings the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 10,407.

There are currently 1,042 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 27 being treated in intensive care.

The total number of positive cases since the pandemic started in March 2020 stands at 166,086.

To date 4,418,804 people have received their first vaccination with 4,132,928 having a second jab.

A total of 3,310,626 Scots have been administered their third or booster dose.

The figures come as new research suggested Covid-19 may contribute to heart damage apparent in severely-ill sufferers.

The study - carried out by the University of Bristol - found that the disease could transform human heart vascular cells into inflammatory cells even if the virus has not actually infected them.

Published in Clinical Science, the research indicated that a new treatment could be used to help alleviate cardiovascular complications as a result of Covid.

The treatment would involve blocking antibodies.
