Scottish Government announces 11 deaths and 7,341 covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government have confirmed 11 people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The death toll since March 2020 – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – is now 10,496.

The latest figures for Scotland showed 7,341 new cases had also been identified overnight.

There are currently 902 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 21 being treated in intensive care.

So far 4,425,282 people have received their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccination, 4,140,451 given a second dose and 3,337,823 have received a third dose or booster.

It comes after the Office of National Statistics (ONS) reported that more people are getting reinfected with Covid twice in the last month since Omicron became the dominant variant.

Released February 2, the most recent ONS report was a survey on Covid reinfections covering cases up to January 23.

It analysed Covid reinfections in periods in which different variants dominated, such as Omicron, Delta and Alpha.

The risk of reinfection soared to be almost 16 times higher when Omicron was the dominant variant.
