Scott Arfield hailed as Rangers star helps Canada end 34-year wait to dump USA

Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield was the star man as he captained Canada to their first win over USA since 1985.

No player in the Canadian team was born the last time they won against their North American rivals.

But a 2-0 victory in Toronto sparked huge celebrations for the home side with Arfield grabbing an assist for the opener and earning plenty of praise.

The Rangers star is confident that the win can spark a revival in Canadian football with young stars such as Alphonso Davies of Bayern Munich and Gent's Jonathan Davies.

He said: "I’ve said it so many times, they’re so innocent — innocent under the pressures and the demands of football, which at times is a wonderful thing to have because you can play so free and fearless.

"It only helps players like myself, Steven Vitoria and Milan (Borjan) — the older veterans on this team — helps us loosen up and play with the no-fear of the young ones."

"It’s a wonderful thing to have, because as you get older you gets these demands thrown at you. I remember when I was a young player, I played with that freedom. You obviously know the other side as you get older and human nature tell you about the bad things rather than the good things."

In a typical performance from the 30-year-old, the MLS player ratings gave him an 8.5. The said: "The Rangers midfielder put on an all-action display of top-shelf quality. Arfield hustled on defense, most notably to shut down an early Morris chance. He also spent the entire night driving his team into the final third, such as when his low feed teed up Davies for a simple finish."

The plaudits were coming his way on social media as well with @jasoninho10 tweeting: "Captain Scott Arfield was excellent in midfield, and Richie Laryea was great on both sides of the ball at right back."

@Cetincem added: "Samuel Piette and Scott Arfield were phenomenal today. Alphonso Davies showed he will win games for Canada going forward - just like the star he is destined to be."

@fouge kept it simple to say: "Scott Arfield is a man possessed #CANMNT"

@KurtLarsonCPL added: "Observations: Osorio/Arfield were class tonight playing in a 'box' midfield."

Kilmarnock forward Liam Millar was an unused sub for the game.
