PARTS of Scotland have been told to brace for thunderstorms after a warning was issued by the Met Office.

At around 2.45pm on Tuesday, the weather forecaster issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms, with heavy rain also likely.

The warning is in effect from 3pm on Tuesday until 10pm and mainly affects parts of the Highlands and central Scotland.

Scots have been warned to expect slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms, which will become more widespread and heavy as the afternoon continues.

While most areas will not see heavy rainfall, some spots in the warning area could see between 15-25mm of rain in an hour, and up to 50mm of rain in several hours.

The showers and thunderstorms are expected to ease into the evening before largely dying out at night.

The Met Office warned of disruption as a result, with delays to train services possible.

Road users have also been urged to take care as driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and hail, impacting those travelling by car or bus.

Power cuts could also take place, while properties could face flooding and further damage from lightning strikes.

The below areas are at risk of thunderstorms:
