Scots student in 'critical condition' after being gored by rhino on African plains

A Scots student is reportedly in a critical condition after being savaged by a rhino in Africa.

It is understood the man came across the black rhino while walking in Northern Zululand in South Africa, and was gored and trampled on.

The man, who has not been named, was rushed to hospital after the horror incident yesterday where he is in a critical condition.

IOL news in South Africa reports game ranger student was being cared for in a KwaZulu-Natal hospital.

It quotes Paul Herbst of IPSS Medical Rescue who said said paramedics were told the student had been on foot in a private reserve when he was trampled and gored by the rhino.

He said: "“The incident occurred earlier today (Wednesday) and prompted a search and rescue operation by IPSS Search and Rescue as well as anti-poaching units in the area.

"The student was located and preparations for evacuation were initiated.

“The student was stabilised before being transported in a critical condition by road, by KZN Private."

Black rhinos are fearsome creatures that live throughout large swathes of Africa and can weigh up to 220 stones.

When they attract an unusual scent they will often charge, according to National Geographic.

Bad eye sight can lead them to charging objects like trees thinking they are threats.
