Scots mum urges people to remember to celebrate Downs syndrome day despite coronavirus crisis

A Scots mum is urging people to celebrate World Down's Syndrome awareness day amidst the coronavirus crisis.

Stacey Corrigan, whose six-year-old son Daniel Murray has the condition, is asking people to don their odd socks and still celebrate, despite the growing Covid-19 pandemic.

Downs Syndrome Awareness Day is on March 21 every year, but with the global coronavirus pandemic most of the official events planned to mark the day had to be cancelled.

But Paisley mum Stacey, 34, who, along with partner Colin Murray, 34, is in isolation for 12 weeks due to Daniel being vulnerable to the virus, says people can still do their bit at home.

She said: "Daniel is vulnerable so we are in isolation for 12 weeks. It will be great to celebrate and do something positive and not worry for the day.

"We are still celebrating and will all be wearing our odd socks. It is one of my favourite days of the year. We celebrate what makes Daniel unique and everyone can get involved in helping to raise positive awareness.

"We are also doing World Downs Syndrome Day art and hanging it in our window. It's a trend we seen online and think it's a wonderful way for the children to do something fun and uplifting in our community.

"Being in isolation won't stop us having fun."

To mark the day, Downs syndrome charity Wouldn't Change a Thing are also hosting a watch party through their Facebook page with Down's Syndrome groups all over the world logging on to share videos and positivity.

Stacey added: "If you want to find something to cheer you up and give you a smile. Maybe a wee tear I'd definitely recommend."
