A mum and son who attacked their neighbours with hammers amid a row over money have avoided jail. Carol Avery, 50, and Jamie Deans, 19, turned on Patricia Wilson, 39, and Mark Nicholson, 37, at their flat in Glasgow's Broomhill on January 11, 2022.
Avery struck Miss Wilson on the head and body where she suffered cuts and bruises. Deans hit Mr Nicholson as he tried to help Miss Wilson. They later threatened to murder another neighbour while armed with wrenches due to an argument over a PlayStation which was not returned to Deans.
Avery and Deans pled guilty to the assaults as well as behaving in a threatening or abusive manner.
They also admitted possession of the weapons without a reasonable excuse or lawful authority. Avery was put under supervision for 12 months and tagged for seven months keeping her indoors between 9.30pm and 6am.
Deans was also ordered to be under supervision for 12 months by Sheriff Lindsay Wood. The pair must also adhere to a five-year non-harassment order not to contact the victims. The court heard Avery had an argument with Miss Wilson earlier that day over the phone.
Prosecutor Lauren Donnelly stated that this was a "money dispute." Avery and Deans attended Miss Wilson's property while armed and barged in. Miss Donnelly added: "Avery struck Miss Wilson with the hammer who then screamed and shouted for help.
"Mr Nicholson attended to assist her however Deans proceeded to strike him with the hammer."
A struggle took place and both victims were able to push the attackers out the door. Miss Wilson was hit with an unknown item during the melee. A 999 call was made and medics tended to Miss Wilson who had cuts and bruises to her arms and body.
Mr Nicholson meantime suffered cuts to his left elbow. The mother and son were traced to their flat and arrested. The court was told Deans kicked the door of another neighbour on March 5, 2022.
He was allowed in but left after a brief moment before returning to the door with Avery. The neighbour was told: "I'm going to kill you, I'm going to slash you." Police were called and found the pair still hurling the abuse.
They were arrested and searched when officers found the pair with a wrench each in their jacket pockets. Deans spat at PC Kyle Hawkins with the spit landing on his body armour.
Avery stated: "I acted in outrage as my son had been stabbed.
"He didn't open the door so I didn't get to hurt him."
Brian Fitzpatrick, defending Deans, told the court: "The victim was loaned a PlayStation by Mr Deans and he failed to return it so they attended at his door."
Alison Miller, defending Avery, stated that she has a new address in the city's Possilpark.
