Scots Mrs Hinch fan transforms her council house for under £70 - and even paints her couch

A Scots mum has transformed her council house for less than £70 - even painting her couch.

Niki Kennedy was fed up of her drab brown kitchen and well-worn white leather sofa - so she took matters in to her own hands.

The Saltcoats mum-of-two says she was considering buying a new couch, but decided to save herself the cash and just upcycle her old one.

She said: "It was a bit done and I was planning to try and get a new one, but then I saw someone one on a Mrs Hinch Facebook page had painted her leather couch so I decided to give it a go."

Niki, 41, bought the leather dye from eBay and says the process was easy.

She said: "You just paint it on with a sponge and do it in a few coats, but letting them completely dry for a couple of hours between coats.

Before: Niki described her kitchen as 'a typical council house kitchen'. (Niki Kennedy)

"The dye has a sealant in it so it doesn't rub off in your clothes.

"It has brought it back to life. It had a few scratches on it from my cat but you can't even see those anymore."

Encouraged by her success, Niki then took her old-fashioned kitchen to task.

Armed with £8 cupboard paint, £15 tile paint and three rolls of Fablon from B&M, Niki turned her kitchen from brown and white to muted grey tones - and she is delighted with the results.

After: Niki's new-look kitchen has the wow-factor (Niki Kennedy)

She added: "It was a typical council-house style kitchen. Brown and basic and I painted all the cupboards grey and and used Fablon to transform the kitchen work tops and it looks completely different."

Niki then used tile paint to change the floor tiles from white to grey before re-grouting them.

She said: "I love doing things like this. It's not difficult and the stuff is cheap if you look in the right places. All the paint for my kitchen was from B&M. If anyone is fed up of their kitchen I would definitely encourage them to do the same."
