A gran aged 86 is getting ready to be a bridesmaid for the first time – for her 26-year-old granddaughter.
Bride-to-be Sarah Henderson was forced to cancel her April wedding and rearrange for December as a result of the coronavirus.
With further restrictions now meaning her bridesmaids can’t take part in her special day, Sarah asked her gran Edith Henderson to step in.
Sarah, of Kelty, Fife, is thrilled her only remaining grandparent will be by her side as she says “I do”.
She said: “It’s been hard to find anything positive from the dark cloud of 2020 but I wanted to find a silver lining.
“That’s when I thought I’d ask my gran to be my bridesmaid.”
Sarah put together a gift for Edith including her favourite lemon tea and Werther’s Originals sweets.
Included was a poem from Sarah asking her gran to take on the role.
The poem instructed Edith to go back and read the capital letters within the stanzas which spelled out: “Be my bridesmaid.”
Sarah said: “She looked at me and said ‘I’m 86-and- a-half!’ I said, ‘Age doesn’t matter, it’s just a number.’”
Edith told the Record: “I was taken unawares. I’ve never been a bridesmaid before but better late than never.
“It will be a nice experience and we’ll have a lovely day.”
Edith has six grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
Her sister Gladys Coulter, 74, said: “She will be a lovely bridesmaid.
“She is so good with words, I think she might write something to say.
“It’s such a shame we can’t all be together for the big day but this will make it so special.”
