Scots councils urged to take share of £30m social distancing fund

Scots councils are being urged to take their share of a £30million Scottish government cash pot to transform areas for social distancing.

Yesterday we told of the major changes coming to major Scots cities, with pavements to be widened, cycle lanes added and cars banned from streets as lockdown restrictions ease.

Funded by the Scottish Government and administered by charity Sustrans, some £30million is to be split between Scotland's 32 councils.

But only £11.8m of this has been awarded to nine councils and others are being urged to apply, 26 of 32 local authorities have either applied or registered interest in the scheme.

A Transport Scotland spokesman said: “The ‘Spaces for People’ fund is available for all local authorities to introduce temporary walking and cycling infrastructure to enable physical distancing and has been well received to date.

"Funding has been increased from £10 million to £30 million with immediate effect. We would encourage all local authorities, urban and rural that haven’t already applied or registered interest to access this funding.”
