Fridges banned at Scots recycling centres after man died in fatal explosion

A Scots council has banned fridges and freezers at recycling centres after a fatal explosion in Perth on Tuesday.

Aberdeen City Council is no longer accepting small electrical items, fridges or freezers following the horror incident at Shore Recycling.

Emergency services rushed to the Friarton Road site following a huge blast and raging blaze around 12.45am on Tuesday.

Sadly a 46-year-old man died at the scene and another man, aged 41, was taken to Ninewells Hospital with serious injuries.

Now council bosses in Aberdeen have made the decision to ban the recycling of fridges and freezers until they understand the impact of what happened in Perth.

They are asking residents to not bring these items to Household Waste Recycling Centres or request a special uplift.

A spokesperson said: "Due to the fire at Shore Recycling in Perth yesterday, recycling of small electrical items and fridges and freezers will be temporarily affected until we better understand the impacts of this situation.

"We are asking residents, where possible, not to bring these items to our Household Waste Recycling Centres or request a special uplift for these, for the time being, whilst we manage capacity at our sites.

"We will provide further updates on the situation as soon as we can. Thank you for your co-operation and understanding."

Angus Council has also followed suit and temporarily banned the recycling of these items as well.
