ScotRail to stop selling tickets on trains to avoid 'unnecessary contact' amid coronavirus outbreak

ScotRail have announced it will stop selling tickets on trains amid the coronavirus outbreak.

They are doing so to avoid any "unnecessary contact", and are advising rail passengers to use a Smartcard if they have one or buy their tickets at ticket offices or at ticket machines.

The measure has been put in place while they "do everything we can" to keep people moving and able to travel into work, particularly those who work in the emergency services.

In a statement released this afternoon via Twitter, Scotrail said: "Scotland's railway continues to provide a vital service for people who need to travel into work, particularly those who work in our essential emergency services.

"That's why we're doing everything we can to keep you moving.

"The latest government advice will naturally have an impact on ScotRail, including how many staff we have available, but we continue to operate a full-service for our customers.

"We know many of you will have to change your travel plans. We want to make this as easy as we can, so we’ve introduced temporary changes to our refund policy.

"For now, our staff won’t be selling tickets on trains, to avoid any unnecessary contact. The best way to travel is with a Smartcard if you have one.

"Tickets can be bought at http://ScotRail.co.uk, at ticket offices or at ticket machines, either on Smartcard or paper ticket.

"It’s a very challenging time for everyone, but we are here to help you. Please remember that railway staff right across the country are doing everything they can to keep you moving".
