Scotland records 7 new Covid deaths as cases raise by 1,686 overnight

Scotland has recorded seven new Covid deaths in the past 24 hours.

The latest figures for Scotland showed that 1,686 new cases had been identified overnight, bringing the total number of positive tests since the pandemic began to 334,141.

The Scottish Government has confirmed the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - stands at 7,820.

There are currently 529 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 51 being treated in intensive care.

3,987,074 people have received the first dose of the Covid vaccination and 3,010,505 have received their second dose.

It comes as Scotland edged closer to normality as the country moved into Level 0 Covid restrictions this week

A number of local authority areas have been stuck with level one and level two restrictions for a number of weeks due to a spike in infections caused by the Delta variant.

But most of the country are now allowed to gather in larger groups, while pubs and restaurants can stay open for longer.

All major legal Covid restrictions have been removed in England, with the need to wear a face covering and caps on household gatherings among those to be completely abolished.

Scotland’s so-called ‘Freedom Day’ is scheduled to take place next month - but rules on face masks are expected to remain in place for the foreseeable future.

It comes as First Minister Nicola Sturgeon held the first Covid-19 briefing of the week yesterday as experts debate whether or not to introduce vaccine passports for large indoor events.

Dr Nicola Steedman, deputy chief medical officer in Scotland said there are still equality issues regarding the rollout of such certifications and any decision will be based on whatever is the “right and equal thing to do.”

She also added that the decision to have a coronavirus vaccine should be up to the individual.

It follows the announcement from Prime Minister Boris Johnson last night that nightclubs and large indoor events in England will be required to check whether ticket holders have been fully vaccinated before being let in as of September.
