Scotland Met Office weather warning as 'severe' 70mph gale force winds hit today

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for 'severe gales' in Scotland on Monday morning with 70mph winds to batter the country.

South West Scotland and Strathclyde will be worst hit by gale force winds which will batter the country before easing off mid-morning.

The yellow weather warning was issued from midnight until 10am on Monday following a week of wet weather and devastating floods.

The Met Office warned of:

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely
  • Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible
  • It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves
  • Damage to trees is possible

The weather warning read: "Gales or severe gales are expected in many coastal areas during the early hours of Monday before easing later on Monday morning.

"Winds will gust quite widely to between 50 and 60 mph along coasts, perhaps reaching 70 mph in the most exposed spots. Inland gusts are expected to be a little lower, peaking in the 40s or low 50s mph."

  • Chaotic weather hit many areas in Scotland last week, with heavy rain throughout and flooding in some places.

Flood warnings and flood alerts were issued for parts of the country as downpours saw up to 100mm of rainfall during the weekend.

Flooding in Dumfries and Galloway last week resulted in residents being evacuated as home were impacted by the rain.

Two bridges were washed away in the Scottish borders due to the downpours as some schools across the country were forced to shut due to dangerous conditions.

Travel was disrupted with road and rail travel impacted by the weather - with disruption likely to continue as Scotland faces gale force winds this morning.
