Scotland coronavirus latest: 22 deaths recorded overnight as Lothian reports 363 new cases

Scotland has recorded 22 coronavirus deaths and 1,825 new cases in the past 24 hours, the latest Scottish Government figures show.

It brings the death toll under the daily measure - of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - to 7,842.

The daily test positivity rate is 6%, the same as the previous day.

NHS Lothian have recorded 363 new cases in the past 24 hours while NHS Fife tallies up another 120 positive cases.

A total of 488 people in Scotland were in hospital on Tuesday with recently confirmed Covid-19, down 41 on the previous day, with 58 patients in intensive care, up seven.

So far, 3,989,927 people have received the first dose of a Covid-19 vaccination and 3,028,271 have received their second dose.

The figures come as further warnings have been made about the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on Scotland’s NHS, with one public health expert claiming the backlog of people waiting for care “will get worse before it gets better”.

Jillian Evans, head of health intelligence at NHS Grampian, said the service is facing a “really exceptional situation” with people waiting for care and staff absences.

The Scottish Government has given £12 million of additional funding to accident and emergency departments to help them cope, as the latest weekly figures showed almost a fifth (19.9%) of patients had to wait more than four hours to be dealt with.
