Scotland ace Hendry blasts Brugge 'stupid mistakes' after penalty blunder

Scotland defender Jack Hendry has held his hands up and accepted responsibility for giving Brugge an uphill battle to stay in the Champions League after he conceded a penalty against Benfica.

Former Fulham and Bournemouth manager Scott Parker is now in charge of the Belgian club and he recalled the ex-Celtic stopper from a loan spell with Cremonese in Italy last month after insisting he was an important part of his team.

But Hendry was at fault for Benfica's opening goal after he fouled Goncalo Ramos to give away a penalty, which was converted by Joao Mario. They lost another goal and must now make up a 2-0 deficit in the second leg in Lisbon.

However, Hendry still believes they can go through, after accepting the blame for the first goal.

He said: "I hesitated too long for the penalty I must admit. The ball came into the penalty area and I waited too long.

"Then we lost a second goal through another individual error. Those things happen in football.

"There is huge disappointment after that. We were not able to take advantage of the moments when we had the upper hand.

"But there is still a second leg. Everything is still possible.

"We just have to support each other now in the second leg because we showed what we could do against Benfica at times.

"If we cut out the stupid mistakes, we still have a chance."The National:
