Science Weekly: An A to Z of Stem Cells

With the inaugural conference of the UK National Stem Cell Network this week, the latest edition of Science Weekly features Doug Melton, co-director of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and one of the world's leading researchers in the field.

Dr Melton discusses his lab's pioneering use of skin cells, cloning and how having a new president in the White House will affect stem cell research. You can listen to the full interview in this week's Science Extra.

Also in the show, we hear from government health minister Ara Darzi, who is part of a team at Imperial College London developing improvements to Da Vinci — the most advanced robotic surgeon on the market. Plus, technology correspondent Bobbie Johnson tells us why the Brain Gym has been dismissed as pseudoscience, and why fasting may ease the unpleasant effects of chemotherapy.

Finally, following a study into dialects and perceived levels of intelligence, we conduct our own research into regional accents and scientific credibility.
