Schools announce closures after flooding causes severe damage

A number of Wirral schools have been forced to close due to flooding damage.

Merseyside was hit with torrential rain, thunderstorms and flooding on Thursday, September 9 after a yellow weather warning was put in place by The Met Office.

The adverse weather led to roads being closed, houses and supermarkets flooding and one person even taking to a kayak in the street.

A number of schools in Wirral have now announced they will be closed tomorrow, Friday, September 9, due to damage caused by the torrential rain.

The Birkenhead Park School, on Park Road South, announced it will be partially closed following the heavy rain today which caused flooding in school.

In a statement on the school's Facebook page, it said: "To ensure the safety of our students, only Years 7 and 11 will attend school tomorrow.

"Years 8, 9 & 10 should remain at home and take part in virtual lessons following their normal timetable via Microsoft Teams."

Co-op Academy Bebington, on Higher Bebington Road will also be closed on September 10.

The school had just had work completed over the summer and said they were 'devastated'.

A statement from Ms Kelly said: "We are devastated that after all the new works completed over the summer and new flooring, we have been totally flooded throughout the school's ground floor and some upper floor classrooms.

"School is closed tomorrow and I will update you further once our Facilities Management Team have appraised the damage, which is extensive. Thank you."

Both Wirral Grammar Boys and Girls School's will be closed with lessons being taught online.

Wirral Grammar for Girls suffered flooding and electrical faults.

A message on the school website said: "Due to weather our electrics and parts of the roof have become unusable. All teaching will take place online for Friday only."

The boys school was 'significant flood damage' according to it's Facebook page.

A statement from the school said: "Please be aware, due to significant flooding and damage to some essential services, we will have to close the school to students on Friday 10th September.

"Please read the e-mail sent to your accounts for further details. Continue to monitor our social media for further updates. Thank you for your understanding."
