Schoolgirl viciously mugged and assaulted by gang on DART service

A schoolgirl was viciously mugged and assaulted during a gang attack on a North Dublin DART service last weekend.

The shocking incident saw four youths – two male and two female – allegedly drag the girl off the train and on to the ground before kicking and punching her in the head during the appalling attack.

It took place on Saturday around 7.30pm at Howth Junction Station in Donaghmede, Dublin Live repots.

A source revealed how the victim was left bleeding and had to be taken to hospital following the disgusting attack.

She is believed to have been kicked and punched in the head while she lay defenceless on the platform, and the vile assault is understood to have only stopped thanks to the intervention of a heroic DART driver who manged to fend off the thugs and get her back onto the train.

A garda spokesman said: "Gardaí are investigating an incident of assault of a minor at Howth Junction, Donaghmede, Dublin 13 on Saturday 30 November 2019 at approximately 7.30pm.

"No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing."

By the end of October, more than 210 reports of anti-social behaviour were reported on DART services.

That's already a huge increase on the previous two years, when 190 incidents were reported.

A number of incidents, including an attack on a security guard that left them with a broken nose, have been reported by Dublin Live this year.

A young boy was also left too afraid to take Irish Rail services from Connolly station following intimidation from a gang.

Fianna Fail spokesman for Dublin John Lahart has previously called for a dedicated transport police.

He said: "It is deeply frustrating that the challenging behaviour of a small disruptive minority continues to cause disruption to services.

“The management in Irish Rail and the Dart have made good efforts to tackle anti-social behaviour on their services, however, they are limited and do not have the necessary authority to do what is needed.

"A zero-tolerance approach must be taken to target the culprits of anti-social behaviour and deter these incidents from persistently occurring on the capital's public transport services."

An Irish Rail spokeswoman confirmed the incident and the assistance from the DART driver.
