Schoolgirl grows three inches overnight after spinal operation

A Formby schoolgirl who had a 90-degrees of curvature in her back has undergone life transforming surgery.

Carly Baker, 13, had spent the last two years living with a major curvature in her spine which prevented her from sleeping normally.

Carly's mum Joanne spotted the problem in 2018 when her daughter was trying on a fancy dress outfit. X-rays confirmed the worst and she was diagnosed with scoliosis.

Carly was still able to go to school, but she struggled to get about and see friends.

However Carly has now had her spine corrected after a major operation at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, reports The Daily Star.

She was terrified of surgery, an eight-hour operation to insert a metal rod into her spine and straighten it to 30 degrees.

Carly said: "I’m so glad I had it.”

Carly had already beaten a heart condition and absent patella syndrome, which left her fighting to walk

Mum Joanne, 48, said: “It’s amazing how straight it now is. Carly has grown by three inches too

“I noticed immediately how straight it was. It’s incredible.”

“It was so hard to see her get worse and how limiting it was for her. The curve was literally S-shaped.

“She hadn’t slept properly in about a year because she couldn’t get comfortable. It was so hard seeing her body change so drastically.”
