School apologises in letter to parents about coronavirus case

A Henbury school has apologised for any concern caused by not informing parents of a coronavirus case sooner.

Blaise Primary and Nursery School, on Clavell Road, says one Year Three child has tested positive but no school bubbles need to self-isolate.

The 432-pupil school wrote to parents on Saturday (October 24): "On Friday we received notification of one new case of Covid-19 within our Year Three cohort.

"We are writing to reassure you that any necessary steps have been taken.

"We notified Public Health England (PHE) and the Department for Education (DfE). Having calculated the dates that a confirmed case might have been both infectious and in school, we were advised that no further action was necessary.

"As the confirmed case was not in school for the 48 hours prior to displaying symptoms, it was not necessary to send a bubble home from school, or to contact individuals who had come into close contact and advise them to self-isolate.

"We apologise if not clarifying this sooner has raised any concerns."

Blaise Primary added it will continue to follow PHE procedure and notify the DfE helpline as soon as it becomes aware of future cases.

It comes hours after Bristol Live revealed Longwell Green Primary School has sent a year group home for two weeks due to a confirmed case.

We reported this week that six schools in Bristol have closed due to Covid-19 cases since term started in September.

A total of 76 schools and nurseries in the Bristol area have seen cases in that time.

You should book a Covid-19 test if your child has at least one of the following:

  • A high temperature - This means if they feel hot to touch on the chest or back. You do not need to measure their temperature.

  • A new continuous cough - This means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or three or more coughing episodes in 24 hours. If your child usually has a cough, it may be worse than usual).

  • A loss or change to their sense of smell or taste - They've noticed they cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal.

Do you think the current Covid restrictions are clear enough? Have your say in our survey.

If your child does not have symptoms of coronavirus but has other cold-like symptoms, such as a runny nose, they do not need to be tested.

They and members of your household do not need to self-isolate. In those circumstances, your child can attend school if fit to do so.

Blaise Primary and Nursery School has been approached for further comment.
