‘Scary’ Liverpool can continue dominance with Thiago as Chelsea's Timo Werner comparison made

Liverpool's purchase of Thiago Alcantara is a 'scary' prospect for the rest of the Premier League and teams across Europe, according to Spanish football analyst Domagoj Kostanjšak.

The Reds have added a player who offers something different into their midfield, despite that area of the pitch being packed with options.

Liverpool already have the likes of captain Jordan Henderson, former RB Leipzig man Naby Keita and Barcelona-linked Gini Wijnaldum among their ranks, plus Brazilian star Fabinho, but Thiago is stylistically unlike any of them.

Kostanjšak told Blood Red on a special Thiago Alcantara podcast: "Looking at Liverpool, they are a scary team. With Thiago in the squad, this is something that they needed.

"Liverpool have a different type of midfielder and Thiago adds a whole new dimension.

"He can penetrate teams through the middle of the park and putting Thiago in that team, you get that verticality. He is an elite passer and no midfielder at Liverpool has the passing range and the vision that he has.

"He can up the tempo when needed, he can slow it down when needed, and he is just a one-man army in midfield!

"Liverpool were quiet throughout the summer but this signing is what they needed to continue the dominance. They have all the pieces necessary and this will push them even higher."

Thiago will be expected to slot into the team immediately, and while there may be a few weeks needed for him to adapt and get used to Jurgen Klopp's system, the Spaniard is not expected to take long to stamp his mark.

Timo Werner, who signed for Chelsea this summer despite consistent links with Liverpool before that move took place, explained this week that the Premier League is very different to the Bundesliga.

He said: "The football is more about power and strength. It could be that I have to adapt a bit for a few games. But I want to play, score and win things.

"I think maybe [it will take time], but maybe not. I think the football in the Premier League fits me very well."

But Kostanjšak added: "There will be a window of adaptation and we have heard Timo Werner talk about the difference between the Bundesliga and the Premier League and how different it is.

"It is more physical and faster, but Thiago is a player who is one step ahead of the opposition so he can avoid the rough duels. He can outsmart the opposition rather than outmuscle them."

Thiago could line up against Werner at Stamford Bridge on Sunday because the paperwork on his signing was submitted to the Premier League in time for him to potentially make the Liverpool squad that travels to London.
