Scarlette Douglas to get in touch with Jonnie Irwin after learning terminal diagnosis

A Place In The Sun presenter Scarlette Douglas has been left devastated after discovering fellow star Jonnie Irwin has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Scarlette, who has been the latest star to be voted off I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! said she would be sending a message to Jonnie, who comes from the Midlands, and his family.

The awful news had been kept from her while she was in the Australian jungle, due to celebs not being allowed to know of any outside world news while on the show, unless it is about a direct family member. She said: “I knew that he wasn’t well, but I didn’t know this. I’ve come out and been told there was something in the papers that he is not well. I didn’t know the true extent of it.”

Father-of-three Jonnie, who comes from Leicester, told Hello! Magazine last week he has secretly been battling terminal cancer and was given six months to live two years ago, the Mirror reports. Scarlette said: “I had heard, but I didn’t realise it was terminal, which makes it sound imminent.

“On A Place In The Sun we’re always in different locations and we never really get to see each other. Sometimes our paths might cross but I think I probably only met Jonnie in person maybe three times, a handful of times, but it was always just brilliant.

“Of course I’m going to drop him a message now because that’s devastating because I know he’s got three young kids, he’s got a beautiful wife and he’s an amazing person.” The presenter received the diagnosis when he went for tests in 2020 over blurry vision while driving.

Scarlette Douglas has been voted off - and has now found out the awful news about Jonnie (ITV)

He revealed he felt like he was carrying a “dirty secret” for the past two years so decided to go public. Speaking on Instagram, he said he needed a few days off social media to give himself some “headspace”. He then headed out into the country with his brother.

After sharing three photos from the dog walk, Jonnie said: “Overwhelmed by your kind messages, not had the chance to read them all yet but I assure you I will. Yesterday I needed some headspace so I escaped to the country with my brother-in-law and his dog. It was a tonic. Xx”
