Scalding KFC gravy left toddler screaming in agony and suffering horrific burns

A toddler was left screaming in pain after suffering horrific burns from a pot of KFC gravy.

Ella Pau was left with burns on her face, fingers, arm and legs after the gravy pot spilt onto her skin.

Terrified mum Jade, 23, said she had "never heard screams like it in her life" as she grabbed her and ran to the bathroom to put her then 18-month-old under cold water.

Ella was soon rushed to A&E at Alder Hey Children's Hospital where she was taken straight to the burns unit and given a cold bath, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Jade's friend Katie had come to visit for a few days with her twins and went to the KFC drive-thru to bring dinner on June 1.

Jade said her friend arrived back with the food and put it down before going to grab plates from the kitchen.

She says Kate's twins, Jacob and Anthony, three, then went into the bag to grab chips from the bargain bucket.

Ella then put her hand in the bag as well and grabbed the gravy pot.

Jade said: "I was stood watching them, it just happened so quick.

"[Ella] put her hand into the bag and when she pulled her hand out she actually had hold of the gravy, the rest of the lid flipped back at her as she picked it up and gravy flicked onto her face.

"And before I knew it, it was all down her. It was all over her arms, mainly her right arm, and because she was on the couch it pooled between her legs."

Jade said she initially didn't realise how much gravy had spilt onto her daughter's skin because it was hidden by her shorts.

She added: "I was undressing her at the same time as showering her, I was going over her face and down onto her arms with the water.

"The worst thing about it was as the water was going onto her skin the colour of the gravy was disappearing but the oil was still sticking to her skin.

"When I was taking her shorts off I could see her legs and the skin had started to bubble. Her legs were the worst at that point because they were the last to get water."

Ella was taken straight to the burns unit for a cold bath to bathe her wounds and she spent the night in hospital.

However, things didn't improve as Ella went into toxic shock after she was discharged from the hospital.

Jade said: "She came home and she was fine, she was made up to be home and then around 12'oclock I noticed she was breathing funny.

"I felt her head and she was roasting hot and then she turned slightly and I could see her back was full of sweat.

"I checked her temperature and it was 39.8. She started waking up and she was struggling to breathe so I picked her up, and as soon as I picked her up she started vomiting."

Jade took Ella back to Alder Hey where she was hooked up to an antibiotic IV drip and doctors said she was showing the signs of toxic shock.

Ella, now 21 months old, spent the following five days in the hospital before she was allowed to come home on June 7.

Since the terrifying events, Jade has gone to the restaurant and contact KFC to raise awareness about what happened.

Jade said Ella now has scars on her legs from the burns and she has to apply cream three times a day.

She had avoided eating any warm foods until a few weeks ago.

A KFC spokesperson said: “Safety is our top priority for our guests, so we’re really sorry to hear about this and we’re in touch with Jade and Ella to fully understand how this happened and help make it right.”
