'Say goodbye to your kneecaps': Drunk 'rapper' chased workmen with wrench and wine bottle

A man who came across three workmen renovating a property caused "pandemonium" when he chased them with a wrench, threw a bottle of wine at them and broke into the house they were working on.

Edwin Loughlin left the three unsuspecting victims terrified when he went on a drunken rampage in the middle of the afternoon on January 9 this year.

The 23-year-old told the men he "was a rapper and had been to prison", before flying into a rage when one of them "refused to smell his finger".

Newcastle Crown Court heard one of the victims was waiting for a lift home when he saw Loughlin standing in the road with an 18-inch long wrench in his pocket and holding a bottle of wine.

Michael Bunch, prosecuting, said the defendant asked the man what he was looking at, before repeating more aggressively "what the f*** are you looking at?".

When the man's boss arrived to pick him up from the property in Hetton-le-Hole, Loughlin went into the rear yard and told the men that he was a rapper and and had been to prison.

Mr Bunch said: "Bizarrely, he then asked one of them to smell his finger, which appeared to be dirty.

"When he refused, the defendant became aggressive."

The court heard Loughlin then made his way to the front of a car and asked who it belonged to, producing the wrench from his pocket when he got no response.

He was "aggressive in his stance, as if he was going to swing it", so one of the men grabbed a hammer "to protect himself and his colleagues".

Loughlin asked them "who wants it first?", before turning to one and saying, "You can have it first as you don't have a hammer."

Mr Bunch said when the man ran a few steps away, Loughlin "turned his attention to the car and struck the passenger side window at full force".

He then chased one of the men around the car before "hitting the wrench against the ground while shouting".

The court heard he shouted at the men: "Say goodbye to your kneecaps".

He then chased one of them up the street and threw the bottle of wine at him.

How are offenders sentenced?

Loughlin failed to calm down even when his mother and sister arrived on the scene, kicking at the wing mirror of another car.

He then jumped over the wall into the rear yard of the property the men had been working on, picked up a brick and smashed the kitchen window before climbing through and damaging the kitchen cabinets.

Mr Bunch said: "When police arrived there was a large amount of blood in the yard and the kitchen. The defendant was being restrained on the ground by two unknown males.

"He became aggressive towards them, kicking out with both legs, shouting and spitting towards police officers."

The court heard when Loughlin was taken to the police station he then spattered blood around the walls and floor of the cell.

Jamie Adams, mitigating, said the details of the case were "alarming for the defendant to hear in his sober state", describing him as "an articulate and thoughtful young man".

Loughlin, of Caroline Street, Hetton-le-Hole, pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon, threatening behaviour and four counts of criminal damge.

Judge Amanda Rippon sentenced him to 12 months behind bars.

She told him: "This incident took place when you were completely drunk in the middle of the afternoon and came across three men doing nothing more than working on a property.

"There was complete pandemonium caused by you."
